The CBT Youth Ensemble was created in 1999 for intermediate level dance students ages 11-17. Ensemble members study with a mix of dance instructors specializing in various dance disciplines: ballet, modern/jazz, hip hop, and tap. One of the strengths of the CBT Youth Ensemble programming is the emphasis on the development of performance skills. The Youth Ensemble usually performs one work per concert within the CBT Dance Company’s performance season as well as performing in youth performances such as the School recital, the Camp final show, and of course, “An Ellington Holiday.” Appearances with the CBT Dance Company exposes the Ensemble students to professionals in their field of interest.
The CBT Youth Ensemble is in high demand for performances and public appearances. Sometimes they perform on their own and sometimes they perform in conjunction with the CBT Dance Company. Over the last fiscal year, the CBT Dance Company and CBT Youth Ensemble reached total audience numbers of 9,425. Over the past few years, the Ensemble has appeared at the Lincoln Center of the Arts Black History Program, Underwood Elementary School, 65th St. Elementary School, Dark Pearl Festival, and the city-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. Audiences at these events are always very impressed and excited to see the level of technique, the experience, and professionalism of CBT's young dancers.
Currently, Ensemble members attend four classes each week and two rehearsals, a total of 9 hours per week committed to their dance training. During the summer, these young ladies take part in CBT’s Summer Youth Arts Camp and dance 30 hours per week for six weeks. At this critical point in their training, payment for year-round classes can cost almost $2,000 per year. Dancers also have to pay for their dancewear and shoes. In efforts to assist these dedicated students in their training, CBT often awards partial and full merit scholarships, multiple discounts. and payment plans. Class fees do not begin to cover the expense of the dance teachers, choreographers, and costumes for this small yet extremely dedicated group of young ladies.
This is considered a continuation of dance education and character development as well as performance experience for the intermediate dance student. The Youth Ensemble performs as their own entity as well as taking part in CBT Dance Company concerts. The exposure of CBT’s young dancers to role models helps to broaden their perception of the dance world and exposes them to the educational and career possibilities that exist such as teaching and choreography.
The CBT Youth Ensemble holds auditions for new ensemble members at least once per year. Call (414) 933-9746 for further information. To audition for the Ensemble you must:
